RAWDPpromotesthe drinking water filter known as the
Mor-sand filter.
RAWDP works to diffuse this filter
technology meets the clean drinking water needs of thousands of households in
Nigeria by offering the average household an affordable Point of Use water
filter that is resilient and rugged in an impoverished economy. This is being
implemented through a trust fund model that is underpinned by micro-finance.
It markedly differs from other filters
by its adoption of these processes and its combination of the individual strengths
of slow sand filtration with the effectiveness offered by coagulation using Moringa oleifera powder. In this way, it effectively rids the
drinking water of health threatening impurities.
Results
Incidents of cholera and
diarrhea since 2004 in parts of Nigeria have been substantially reduced through
the introduction of the filter. The has also been confirmed to rid water of
hardness as householder members using filtered water to wash hands confirmed
that it easily lathers with soap.
The filters' specific performance in removal of hydrocarbons and other heavy
metals is still being investigated though sparse successes have been reported in
controlled experiment carried out in local laboratories with Palintest
photometers.
