An independent subsidiary of RAWDP; Latrine-Tec helps families to build and use
good toilets, empty septic tanks and pits and use the wastes in agriculture and
biogas generation. Latrine-Tec also partners
with the public and other private groups.
These social and technical activities are aimed at supporting firstly, the adoption and use of improved toilets by households. Where water for flushing toilets exist it upgrades simple pits to VIP latrines or pour-flush and where water is scarce, it promotes waterless systems such as the Urine Diverting toilets.
The company has its own management and staffs, and as
a sanitation company works to prevent pollution in the first place. It
partners with the public and private groups to improve environmental health, personal
dignity and the quality of the living environment. It also promotes the use of
appropriate technologies, sound social intervention methodologies and access to
micro-credit mechanisms for construction costs of toilets. Top
amongst activities here is to effectively maximize the barrier impacts of
sanitation systems on diseases through responsive technologies in order to
protect drinking water sources from pollution.
Beyond
latrine emptying services is the need for latrine short listing and upgrading.
This is so because families practicing open defecation are unlikely to change
directly to using a flush toilets or septic tanks. Since alternatives are
limited in the city, we promote the upgrading of primitive sanitation
infrastructure through the installation of water seal pans over pit latrine
slabs, and its relocation in the house and connection to the pit by a short
length of pipe etc.
