RAWDP deploys ecological sanitation as a strategy to achieve high rate mitigation of faecal contamination of water sources.
Our approach is unconventional because it seeks to redesign and improve the traditional toilet/latrine systems by totally eliminating the mixing of flush water, urine and feces in one chamber with a view at totally eliminating seepage and leakage of sewage effluents into groundwater sources. By so doing, urine and flush water; and then feces are diverted and treated separately. This approach is based on the fundamental principle of preventing pollution rather than attempting to control it after we pollute.
It is a recipe that offers a secured mitigation strategy to on-site sanitation point source pollution of ground water. This approach is most germane because about 95% the raw sewage produced in Nigeria is released untreated into the environment, where it pollutes drinking water sources. The downstream impact of this pollution is two-fold. Globally, Diarrheal diseases are the second-leading cause of death in children living in low-income countries, and cause 2.5 million deaths among adults and children annually.
To deliver and achieve ecological sanitation, RAWDP floated an independent subsidiary; Latrine-Tec. Latrine-Tec introduced a smart sanitation solution that constructs and empty filled latrines and use the sludge in agriculture as soil conditioners by farmers. RAWDP collaborates with, and encourages community participation through the use of activities like the ‘School Program’ which aims to increase awareness about sanitation systems; the ‘Neighborhoods Program’ which explains the procedures necessary to obtain affordable services in selected neighborhoods.
